Our Story
MHA Creative Landscapes Inc. was founded in 2017 by Michael H. Alvarado. The business began as a small, family‑run design studio rooted in Marin and Sonoma counties. Michael’s foundation in landscape architecture—shaped at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo—set the tone for a practice built on intention, clarity, and a deep respect for the natural character of the Bay Area.
What started as a design‑focused studio quickly grew into a comprehensive landscape design and construction firm having completed countless projects throughout the Bay Area. MHA Creative Landscapes brings our designs to life with the same precision and artistry that defined the studio’s early work thanks to our in-house construction teams and our talented partners.
Today, the company continues to operate with the spirit of a local family business—personal, attentive, and deeply connected to the region—while delivering refined, sculptural landscapes from concept through completion. Every project reflects our commitment to thoughtful design, transparent communication, and craftsmanship that endures.
Our Values
Luxury begins with peace of mind. Our process is transparent, steady, and gracefully communicated, ensuring you move through each phase without hesitation or surprise. Clarity becomes its own form of comfort—an elegance you can feel.

Michael has had a passion for being in the garden from a young age. It was through weekends spent at his grandparent's house in San Rafael that his curiosity for botany and horticulture began. Odalis Diaz
Designer / Project Manager
I came across landscape architecture and fell in love with the eco-friendly aspect. I graduated from Berkley with a BA in Landscape architecture. I worked at a small firm beforehand, and I was indoors all day. I then learned more about MHA Creative Landscapes and found myself outside and loved every minute of it. I love the full aspect of design, seeing it from start to finish. I get to work with clients, and different materials all the time in different locations and it always keeps me engaged. My Favorite Plant: Salvias—there are so many different varieties and purposes, and they are great for attracting pollinators. They are also low maintenance, not requiring much water or attention.
My Favorite Season: " I love Spring; it's a breath of fresh air. Plants are starting to grow, and it is the beginning of sunshine, which makes me want to go outside."
My Approach to Challenges: I approach site-specific challenges head-on, keeping in mind what one solution will have an effect on the project as a whole, and move forward from there. I also enjoy talking to my coworkers and seeing their perspectives on specific challenges.

A Nice Day at Work includes being outside on any sunny day and getting the opportunities to see all plants thrive with all our hard work and love.
Some of the most common mistakes are pruning plants at the wrong time of year, which could be detrimental to the health of the plant.
Some of my key skills: I’ve honed my skills in irrigation, aesthetically pleasing plant placement, and finding eco-friendly plant options. One of my favorite materials to work with is hog wire and vines that can be train.
My Favorite Plant: is a Passion Fruit Vine, the colors can be vibrant and bring any boring fence to life.
